J.Crew Gift Box Dispenser

Automated Brand-Activation Hardware

As a mechanical engineering intern at We Are Matik, I supported the design and deployment of an automated 6-column gift box dispenser for a 4-day J.Crew client event servicing more than 2,000 guests.

Overview

We Are Matik builds experiential brand activations. My role was to support the mechanical design and deployment of an automated gift box dispenser for a 4-day J.Crew event that serviced more than 2,000 guests.

02

What I worked on

  • Reduced structural weight of the 6-column dispenser by 40%, lowering shipping costs and the load on the frame.
  • Applied DFM / DFMA principles to integrate a tab and slot system across all laser-cut panels, streamlining assembly and reducing build time.
  • Designed and 3D-printed custom mechanical components: a token acceptor, sensor mounts, and dispenser arms in Fusion 360.
  • Diagnosed and resolved 3 field failures within 24 hours, performing failure analysis and corrective design changes on-site.
03

Outcome

The dispenser ran reliably for the full 4-day activation with no critical failures, servicing 2,000+ guests across the event.
